Tamara Rumburg, Psy.D.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Tamara Rumburg is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who provides psychotherapy virtually to individuals across the lifespan. She has specialized training in treating serious mental illness and providing recovery-oriented care. Dr. Rumburg is committed to creating a safe, nonjudgmental and inclusive space, building a genuine relationship with her clients, and working collaboratively with her clients so they may heal from painful experiences, grow into the most authentic version of themselves, and pursue a values-driven life.

Dr. Rumburg’s approach to therapy is person-centered and integrative, with a strong foundation in evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness. She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which are both evidence-based treatments for trauma. She has extensive experience treating depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorder, insomnia, ADHD, substance use, and psychosis/schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

With over a decade of experience providing therapy, Dr. Rumburg has helped clients learn to communicate assertively, set boundaries, manage relationship distress and difficult relationships, decrease self-criticism and increase self-compassion, get "unstuck” from anything that is holding them back, find meaning and purpose, challenge and shift limiting beliefs, improve sleep hygiene and quality, build resilience, decrease nightmares, navigate life transitions, process grief, manage anger, regulate emotions, clarify values/goals, manage stress, and show up more authentically in their lives.

Dr. Rumburg has trained at all levels of care (inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient), and worked with clients across the lifespan (ages 6-92). She has provided individual and group therapy, conducted assessments, and offered consultation services to various clinics and disciplines. While Dr. Rumburg has a strong empirical background in resilience research through her master’s program, she began providing therapy in her doctoral program. This started at an outpatient community counseling clinic at Pepperdine University, and continued with the addition of consultation services at an outpatient behavioral medicine clinic at Harbor UCLA. There, she worked with clients who had co-occurring medical (e.g. HIV, Diabetes, fertility and pregnancy challenges) and mental health difficulties (e.g. depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis). She then worked at an LA county/USC affiliated inpatient unit providing individual and group therapy as well as assessment services to individuals with serious mental illness. Her last year of her doctoral program involved completing her internship at Sharp Healthcare in San Diego, where she provided therapy and assessment services during three rotations including adolescent inpatient, substance use residential/partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient CBT/DBT for adults. Dr. Rumburg completed the last year of her training at the VA San Diego/University of California San Diego in a specialized postdoctoral residency and interprofessional fellowship in psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery. During this, she provided group and individual therapy, as well as recovery-oriented coaching and supported employment to Veterans with serious mental illness.

Dr. Rumburg earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine and her Master of Education degree in Child Studies (Empirical Research Track) from Vanderbilt University. She completed her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in Clinical Psychology at Pepperdine University. Dr. Rumburg is originally from McLean, Virginia, and has lived in Irvine, Los Angeles, and San Diego, California, Philadelphia, Nashville, and now Charleston, South Carolina. When she’s off the clock, she enjoys reading, cooking, spending time outdoors, hosting gatherings, and traveling.
